PAINT SPECIFICATION NO. 8 – Aluminum Vinyl Paint
1. Aluminum Vinyl Paint Scope
1.1 This specification covers a ready-to-mix aluminum vinyl chloride, acetate copolymer paint intended for use over vinyl butyral wash primer (SSPC-Paint 27) or as a finish coat over vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer paint such as SSPC-Paint 9. This paint is not intended or recommended for use over bare steel.
1.2 The Aluminum Vinyl Paint is suitable for exposures in Environmental Zones 2C (fresh water immersion), 2D (salt water immersion), and 3B (chemical, neutral), and is intended primarily to be used as a finish coat in a system applied to blast cleaned (SSPC-SP 10) or pickled (SSPC-SP8) steel. When used for salt water immersion, a wash primer is recommended. Because of the possibility of lifting of the undercoats, this paint is not intended to be used over types of paints which have poor solvent resistance. This paint is intended primarily for application by conventional air spray and is to be applied in accordance with SSPC-PA 1, “Shop, Field, and Maintenance Painting of Steel.”
2. Description
2.1 This paint consists of metallic leafing aluminum pigment and vinyl resins in solution suitably plasticized to make a durable, elastic paint film. This paint includes a hydroxyl-containing polymer for good adhesion to wash primers. It is supplied, unless specified otherwise, as two components to be mixed just before use. Details of the composition are given in Table 1.
2.2 The Aluminum Vinyl Paint contains approximately 14% by volume of nonvolatile film-forming solids (pigment and binder). The theoretical spreading rate for a 1.0 mil (25 micrometers) dry film thickness is 225 square feet/U.S. gallon (5.5 square meters/ liter). Actual spreading rates can be significantly lower.
3. Referenced Standards
3.1 The latest issue, revision, or amendment of the referenced standards in effect on the date of invitation to bid shall govern unless otherwise specified. If there is a conflict between the requirements of any of the cited reference standards and this specification, the requirements of this specification shall prevail.

This paint contains chromate pigments. Users are urged to follow all health, safety and environmental requirements in applying, handling, and disposing of these materials.

4. Composition
4.1 Ingredients and proportions shall be as specified in Table 1.
4.2 The paint based on the specified ingredients shall be uniform, stable in storage, and free from grit and coarse particles. Beneficial additives such as anti-skinning agents, suspending agents, or wetting aids may be added. The aluminum paste shall be packaged separately unless otherwise specified in the procurement documents.
4.3 The paint shall conform to the composition (analysis) requirements of Table 2.
5. Properties
5.1 The paint shall meet the requirements of Table 3 and Sections 5.2 through 5.7.
5.2 ODOR: Shall be normal for the materials permitted (ASTM D 1296).
5.3 COLOR: The vehicle before mixing with the aluminum paste shall be clear. The color after mixing shall be typical of aluminum paint (dull aluminum luster).
5.4 COMPATIBILITY: There shall be no evidence of incompatibility of any of the ingredients of the paint when
two volumes of the paint are slowly mixed with one volume of thinner consisting of 85% toluene and 15% methyl isobutyl ketone by volume (FED-STD-141, Method 4203).
5.5 ADHESION: The paint under test shall show good adhesion when tested as follows: apply one coat (1.0 mils, 25 micrometers dry film thickness) of the mixed paint to a clean steel panel free of rust or scale, also to a similar panel pretreated with wash primer DoD-P-15328, “Primer (Wash) Pretreatment,” or SSPC-Paint 27, “Basic Zinc Chromate—Vinyl Butyral Wash Primer” (0.5 mils, 12.5 micrometers dry film thickness). After a 24-hour dry, the film under test on each panel shall be subjected to a knife test to determine whether the paint exhibits good adhesion to the undercoats and to the steel.
5.6 WORKING PROPERTIES: The paint shall be easily applied when tested in accordance with FED-STD-141, Methods 4331 and 4541. The paint shall show no streaking, running, or sagging after drying.
5.7 CONDITION IN CONTAINER: The paint shall show no thickening, curdling, gelling, or hard caking when tested as specified in FED-STD-141, Method 3011, after storage for six months from date of delivery, in a full, tightly covered container, at a temperature of 50-110°F (10-43°C).
6. Labeling
6.1 Refer to ANSI Z129.1, “Hazardous Industrial Chemicals—Precautionary Labeling”. Other guidelines can be found in the National Paint and Coating Association (NPCA) “Paint Industry Labeling Guide.”

6.3 DIRECTIONS FOR USE: The following directions for use shall be supplied with each container of paint:
Directions for Use of Aluminum Vinyl Paint
The Aluminum Vinyl Paint is intended for use over vinyl butyral wash primer (SSPC-Paint 27) or as a finish coat over vinyl chloride-acetate SSPC-Paint 8 November 1, 1982 Editorial Revisions November 1, 2004 copolymer paint. It is supplied in two components to be mixed just before using.
Gradually add small portions of the liquid to the aluminum paste. Mix the paste thoroughly until it is smooth and free of lumps. Then gradually add the reminder of the liquid, stirring constantly. It is recommended that the paint be mixed by a mechanical mixer.
The paint shall be thinned as necessary with solvent containing not more than 85% toluene and 15% methyl isobutyl ketone or methyl ethyl ketone. The amount of thinning will depend upon application methods and conditions, and may be as high as 25% to 33% by volume of the paint.
When required, this paint may be tinted to a contrasting color by the addition of a stable tinting pigment dispersed in a vinyl chloride-acetate copolymer resin solution.
Apply by conventional air spray. Brushing may be used in small areas. The surface to be painted shall be dry and above 35°F (2°C), not less than 5°F (3°C) above the dew point. Do not paint outdoors in rainy weather. Apply so as to obtain a minimum dry film thickness of 1.0 mils (25 micrometers). A wet film of paint shall be deposited on the surface when spraying; the spray gun should be adjusted so that proper atomization is obtained but no dry powder is deposited on the surface. The nozzle should be held about six inches from the surface during application.
If application is to be made by brush, apply with a brush heavily loaded with paint; apply quickly and smoothly. Avoid excessive brushing and do not go back over the surface until thoroughly dry.
At temperatures between 60 and 80°F (16 and 27°C), dry at least one hour between coats and 72 hours before immersion. Varying atmospheric conditions and degrees of ventilation in confined spaces may allow shorter or require longer drying times.
NOTE: This paint is not to be used as a priming coat next to bare steel.
7. Inspection
7.1 All coatings supplied under this specification are subject to timely inspection by the purchaser or his authorized representative. The purchaser shall have the right to reject any materials supplied which are found to be defective under this specification (see Note 9.1). In case of dispute, unless otherwise specified, the arbitration or settlement procedure established in the procurement documents shall be followed. If no arbitration procedure is established, a procedure mutually agreeable to the purchaser and material supplier shall be used.
7.2 Samples of Aluminum Vinyl Paint may be requested by the purchaser and shall be supplied upon request along with the manufacturer’s name and identification for the materials. Samples may be requested at the time the purchase order is placed or may be taken from unopened containers at the job site.
7.3 Unless otherwise specified, the sampling shall be in accordance with ASTM D 3925.
