Rust Auto ClassicRust Protection Classic Cars and Automotive

For anyone who lives in Australia, especially along the coast, the correct rust protection is crucial to your vehicle’s condition. This is especially true for classic cars that have more metal parts that are exposed. It is why appropriate classic automotive rust proof products are essential if you want to maintain the overall condition and luster of the vehicle.

One of the more vulnerable areas are the bumpers. On classic vehicles, many of the bumpers are coated in chrome. Made from chromium, this shiny metal gives many classic cars their distinctive look. However, chrome is vulnerable to oxidation when exposed to the different temperature and humidity conditions found in Australia.

How to Rust Proof Chrome Parts

If the elements are showing signs of corrosion, but have yet to chip or become fully compromised, then you can return the chrome to like-new condition by gathering the following for rust proofing.

  • Carwash Soap, Microfibre Towels, and Fine Grade Sandpaper
  • Nitrile Gloves, Masking Tape, Rust Treatment, and Chrome Polish

Because you may be working with hazardous chemicals, be sure you do the surface preparation in the driveway or other outdoor location. You will need to wash, dry, sand, and treat the rust so that you can apply the chrome polish to restore its appearance.

Wash & Dry:
Use a good carwash soap that cleans away all dirt and debris from the chrome. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of the soap. You can use spare towels or rags to wipe away the moisture. Let it fully dry before taking the next step.

Use Masking Tape:
Apply the masking tape to areas near the chrome that might contact the rust coating or chrome polish. This will prevent possible damage as the tape will block it from reaching the surface.

Sand & Apply the Treatment:
You’ll need to sand away the areas that have rust, then apply the rust coating to the surface. This may require fully removing the surrounding chrome from the metal. This will take some time depending on the extent of the rust.

Polish & Wipe Dry:
Once the rust is fully removed and the area treated, you can now apply the chrome polish. Once applied, polish it with the microfibre towels. You may need to repeat this process several times before getting the desired results.

If you do not have the time, you can hire a professional company to do the job for you. While you will have to pay, the results may be worth it. This is especially true if this is a classic car that you want to sell. A suitable rust removal job and chrome restoration will help boost its overall value. Plus, the work of professionals in the field is guaranteed, so you can get the best results possible.

For the best in automotive rust proof products, you will need to use the ones that meet and exceed rigorous standards for use in Australia. The correct rust protection for classic vehicles starts by removing the rust that is present, then coating the surface with the right product to prevent further oxidation.
