Rust Bullet Review

RUST!!!! The word can bring tears to the eyes of even the toughest CK5er. If you live in an area that gets snow, chances are you’ve got some form of rust somewhere on your rig. Road salt can find it’s way into every nook and cranny underneath your truck, and any exposed metal will eventually succumb to it’s power. My 1984 K5 has lived it’s entire life in Alberta, and after 21 winters, the frame and underside of the body had finally gotten to a point where it needed some major TLC to deal with the heavy surface rust that had formed. To make matters worse, the previous owner had sprayed the truck with a rubberized undercoating that, over time, had cracked and split all over the place, allowing road salt to get trapped next to the metal surfaces. There Are No Two Ways About It, Rust Needs to Die!

This article was written by Jason Walker, Associate Editor for Custom Rodder Magazine, and is featured in the September 2003 issue.

Successfully dealing with a rusty car can be as exasperating as troubleshooting electrical problems. Once you start, it’s like opening the proverbial can of worms. Rust travels under paint, rubber, carpet, and just about anywhere else you might not look until it’s too late. Normally this would mean spending many hours grinding, cutting, and forming patch panels to replace the cancerous metal that needs to be cut out. So what about a rusty chassis or any other part that simply has been affected on the surface? You wouldn’t want to cut out a section of rusty windshield frame, only to have to build a whole new channel section to fit in its place, unless you are extremely competent with bodywork or the rust has completely deteriorated the metal. Sometimes the best way to deal with small areas of surface rust is to simply grind through the top layer until you see clean, shiny metal. The problem with grinding the rust off is knowing how deep the rust has traveled and when to stop grinding. Simply put, if the affected area is too far gone, there really isn’t anything you can do but cut it out and replace it with new steel. But, if the affected area is suffering from surface rust only, you will want to read on. More »

According to veteran bodyman, painter, and hot rodder Carl Brunson, Rust Bullet is the best thing he’s ever seen for use over, and prevention of, rust. Rust Bullet is a two-application product that penetrates the porous rust and reaches the metal underneath, producing chemical activity. Basically, the rust becomes intertwined in the resin matrix of Rust Bullet and remains a permanent part of the coating. The second coat of Rust Bullet fills any pinholes in the first coat and forms a nearly impenetrable coating that protects the metal.

Silver gray in color, Carl points out that while topcoats aren’t required, conventional paint can be applied over the second coat for appearance. Rust Bullet offers excellent abrasion resistance and is quite difficult to scratch (which makes it excellent for suspension components). If a scratch or chip in the coating does occur, the metal will rust in the breached area, but rust will not proceed beyond the breach. Rust Bullet will not lift, blister, or peel away from its leading edge in any significant degree. Simply reapplying Rust Bullet over the scratch or chip reseals the coating, proving easy, low-cost maintenance.

1966 VW Undercarriage Rust Protection

automotive undercarriage rust protection

Testimonial Description:

Dear Rust Bullet,

I just completed the second coat of Rust Bullet on the underside of my 1966 VW and I am completely satisfied and pleased with the quality of the product.  It sprayed on easily and looks beautiful.  The self leveling quality filled in the rusted spots to the point where they disappeared.  I’ve used POR 15  on other VW’s and Rust Bullet is by far a superior product.

Thanks, Lou

Chain Link Fence Rust Protection

Testimonial Description:

While thumbing through my September issue of “Custom Rodder”, I came across the “Rust Bullet” product. Although many think we would be ordering this product for a restoration vehicle, that was not the case, we were purchasing it to cover our chain link fence. We found that “Rust Bullet” was very easy to work with and left us with a fabulous finish on our fence. Attached you will find pictures of our accomplishments, thanks to “Rust Bullet”. I will be sure to follow up with photos for you next year to show how things are holding up.

Thanks again “Rust Bullet”,

Rust Bullet – A Durable Easy to Use and Lasting Product

Testimonial Description:

Dear Rust Bullet,

I tell everyone I can to purchase Rust Bullet and for demonstration purposes point to the drip stain on the driveway which the snow plow, salt, wind, snow, rain etc hasn’t been able to budge. I also let them try to chisel the spot on the work bench off. It is highly amusing watching them beat on that spot with a chisel and hammer. It has scratched, dented, etc., but it is still very much adhered to the wood.

Anyway, Thank You for making such a durable easy to use and lasting product.

Your customer for life,

Thomas L. Winzenburger

Steel Hull Houseboat Rust Protection

Testimonial Description:

Praise for Rust Bullet,

I have a steel hull houseboat which I keep on Table Rock Lake just north of here. Some surface rust has developed on the inside of the hull, which I intend to treat with Rust Bullet.  I just wanted to tell you what a pleasure it has been doing business with you from your website. Everyone should set up their sites to perform as well as yours. I didn’t know what product to use.  Your website convinced me to use Rust Bullet. But there’s more.

You provided full information about the products you sell. This is incredibly helpful for an uninformed buyer (like me) who has never bought a rust control product before, and who has never purchased anything from your company.

You provided complete contact information. You don’t hide your address and phone number like some of these outfits do, in fact, you encouraged contact.

You provided immediate acknowledgment of my order. Within seconds of ordering, I got a confirmation email.

You provided immediate processing and shipping of my order, complete with UPS tracking number.

In short, your website gave me everything I needed to make a buying decision, and then kept me fully informed of the status of my purchase.

If your Rust Bullet product works as well as your website — and I expect it will — it will have been nothing but a pleasure doing business with you.

Well done. My appreciation, and highest compliments.

Regards,

Ted Thompson

A Fantastic Product and the Finish is Just Like Powder Coating

Testimonial Description:

March 3rd 2004

FRAME PAINTING COMPLETED!!!

It was a difficult job, with so many tubes to coat, but the results were worth the effort. 3 coats of Rust Bullet later and the car is ready for re-assembly.

My initial thoughts on Rust Bullet are that it’s a fantastic product and the finish is just like powder-coating.

Testimonial Description:

Subject: Thank you for an EXCELLENT product.

To whom it may concern:

People do not normally take the time to compliment manufacturers, but after using Rust Bullet for a few years, I had a hard time not writing you to thank you for such an excellent product.

I use the automotive product in my restores but more impressively I used it on my ranch.. Let me elaborate.

I own a horse ranch. On the ranch is an 11 stall barn. At the top of each stall door is a metal yoke. Its two pieces of metal that come down to allow the horse to stick his head through. The horses love the two pieces of metal to scratch on. After about 3 months, a horse normally will wear not only the paint on the yoke but the metal itself will start rounding off.

I did an experiment. I coated 10 yokes with Rust Bullet and 1 I left untreated. After 1 year all 10 yokes that are treated still look like new, not even the corners are worn.

On the untreated yoke the paint wore off long ago. The metal is now being filed down by constant horse scratching.

This stuff is harder than steel! Unbelievably amazing stuff.

BTW, you never mentioned that POR15 is sensitive to UV. If you leave it in the sun after around 1 week it turns splotchy. Not with Rust Bullet.

Thanks again for this excellent product. Second to none. PERIOD.

Testimonial Description:

Take a good look at what Rust Bullet did for my 1977 Chevy truck and for me, This product is AWESOME!!!!!

It allows you to completely KILL THE RUST that has formed on any body panels like floor boards, rocker panels, ect.. Thus saving you time and money from expensive panel replacement and allowing you to retain the original sheet metal.

This stuff really works and it is also easy to apply, no expensive cleaners or agents to buy just follow the simple directions and you will have perfect results every time and any one willing to try Rust Bullet will have the same results too. Even my wife is impressed on how well it has finished out.

I never would have purchased this product if it did not do what they say it will do because I have a young boy and some day this old truck will be his. Thanks to Rust Bullet.

It really kills rust.
